Healing from Trauma

You do not have to be bound by your past.

We all have experienced difficult things in our lives. Often, we get to a point where the memories do not cause the same emotional distress as when the event first occurred. However, traumatic events are different – they are intense, scary, and overwhelming. Trauma can leave an open emotional wound you carry even after the traumatic event is over.

Trauma can occur at any time in your life. Common types include:

  • Accidents
  • Abuse (emotional/physical/sexual)
  • Sexual assault
  • Experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event
  • Serious illness
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Reproductive trauma, such as infertility, pregnancy/infant loss, birth trauma, and NICU experiences

Traumatic memories can get “stuck” and continue to bother you. Your body and mind continue to feel like the event is happening in the present, not the past. Maybe painful thoughts pop in your mind out of nowhere, someone mentioning it causes your heart to race and stomach to drop, or you just want to avoid talking or thinking about it at all costs. You are on guard for the next bad thing to happen or have difficulties with sleep, concentration, and irritability. You may even blame yourself, even when everyone is telling you it wasn’t your fault. You may feel suffocated and like you can’t move on.
